Many special-format printing machines are used today in high-volume print bureaus that specialize in mass-mailings and billing applications. Formatting the data into print file to suit the various printers is a specialized task.

Often, the documents will require barcodes and special marks to control automatic enveloping machines. The print file may also be required in different formats for different bureaus, and for local printing of one-off reprints.
