XML is a widely-used modern format for transferring data from one computer system to another. EDI is an older format for moving data between computer systems.

XML is most often used with web applications. EDI is often used for billing and invoicing applications between companies with large amounts of transactions e.g. car manufacturers and their parts suppliers.

In both cases, the precise layout of the data is not standardised. It is designed by the creator of the data and then communicated to the readers in a separate document - although the format can often be deduced by looking at the data.
